• Building Surveyors Promoting Construction to Suffolk Schools

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting RICS surveying and construction to schools, Dayle Bayliss, a STEM Ambassador, spent the 25th June 2012 at Combs Middle School, Suffolk.  The event was organised by the Suffolk Education Business Partnership and with Combs Middle School groups of pupils across all age groups were given the task to design a model wheelchair from K’nex for a paralympian.  The pupils were given a 50g piece of plasticine to represent the paralympian and this had to be placed in a seat between the rear wheels.  The axle could be a maximum of 120mm and the model had to have one wheel to the front.  Each model was placed on a ramp and the wheelchair that travelled the furthest won the challenge.

At the end of the day the winning groups discussed why they felt their models travelled the furthest.  The day ended with Dayle giving a brief discussion on what work we are involved in and what the role of a Building Surveyor is all about.

It was a great day and the next event will be part of the schools CREST awards and a Solar panel challenge.
